This post honors all the extraordinary teachers who have come in and out of my life – most at exactly the right time – offering up all they know so generously and graciously.
I have been trying to understand duality and non-duality within the realm of the yogic world and the explanations never stick and also boggled my brain. This morning while listening to a conversation between Jon Kabat-Zinn (founder of Mindfullness Based Stress Reduction) and Tara Brach during her Radical Compassion Challenge, Dr. Kabat-Zinn made it accessible and I got it! Duality = othering. Non-Duality = oneness. Wow!
“Wherever You Go There You Are,” by Dr. Kabat-Zinn is a seminal book for me. It’s been at least 20 years since I first read it and I still quote it and recommend it all the time. If you haven’t read it, it isn’t too late.
Following the Yellow Brick Road…This led me to a recent talk at Columbia University Law School with Professor Rhonda Magee, Dr. Kabat-Zinn and renowned meditation teacher, Sharon Salzberg. So worth watching. Just attended a lecture (via Zoom of course) with Professor Magee and David Treleaven for my advanced Trauma Sensitive Mindfullness course and she rocked my world. Funny how the world seems to be getting smaller as I keep running into the amazing teaching of this group of experts. And Rhonda Magee has a new book out that is a must read! An easy search online for the people I’ve mentioned above will lead you to talks, books and so much much.
Ubuntu – a South African term that means, according to Professor Magee, “I am because you are, because you are, I am.” It is used as a greeting and signifies, “I see you.” If you search this it is also a font and a variety of other things. More synchronicity.
As you can read, I will be using this space to tell you what’s on my mind and what I am reading, eating, doing and so on. You can count on tons of talk about meditation, yoga, food and knitting!
